The CDC Breastfeeding Report Card1 shows that in 2011, 79% of infants started breastfeeding but only 27% were still breastfeeding at 12 months. Considering that The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding up to two years of age and beyond2, these numbers are worrisome. One of the most common reasons for new mothers to stop breastfeeding is the pain from raw or irritated nipples usually experienced during the first weeks of nursing. The degrees of soreness vary from one mother to another with some experiencing only mild discomfort while others suffer from cracked and bleeding nipples. Some of the causes can be an improper latch, the position of the baby during breastfeeding or simply the fact that our nipples are a very sensitive part of our bodies.

Amorini is a new product recently introduced in the United States that uses the antibacterial and healing properties of Silver to help sooth sore and cracked nipples. Amorini is a pair of pure Silver discs molded in the shape of a “shell” designed to lower the risk of infections and accelerate the recovery process between breastfeeding sessions. They are to be worn directly on the nipple, inside the bra, between baby feedings. Amorini is very easy to use, safe for both mother and infant, hypoallergenic and 100% natural.
These Silver “shells” are crafted in Italy where they are very popular and have been used by breastfeeding mothers for decades. The Silver uses in medicine dates back to the 1800s and has been used in form of wound dressings, surgical instruments, and more recently in Silver-coated breathing devices. The antibacterial proprieties of Silver have been recognized for centuries.
Ancient Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans stored wine, water and vinegar in Silver vessels to ensure freshness and to avoid spoilage caused by bacteria. Studies conducted by Dr. Harry Margraf3, a biochemist and pioneering Silver researcher, have revealed that Silver has the ability to destroy over 650 known pathogenic microorganisms within minutes compared to typical antibiotics, which can only kill fewer than 10.
Scientists also found that Silver interrupts the ability of bacteria cells to form the chemical bonds essential to the survival and growth of the bacteria. It has also been proven to promote the growth of new cells, therefore speeding the healing process for wounds. Unlike common remedies such as lanolin-based creams, nipple balms or silicone nipple soothers, Amorini puts nothing between you and your baby and leaves no residue, which could have side effects on baby’s acceptance of the breast. If you are a breastfeeding mother or plan on becoming one, this innovative use of Silver will give you the peace of mind you need to start the breastfeeding journey with confidence.
