You know how drastic the first few weeks of pregnancy can feel as the body endures a rapid amount of surging hormones on the rise- Now imagine those same hormones dropping at the speed of light the second you give birth over the first few days and weeks Postpartum- NO WONDER we endure such drastic waves of emotions, thoughts and feelings postpartum, that are beyond valid. The postpartum hormone drop is considered the single largest sudden hormone change in the shortest amount of time for any human being, at any point of their life cycle. During pregnancy, our estrogen and progesterone increase to the level of something like taking a hundred birth-control pills a day. Progestrone: Progesterone helps the fertilized egg be implanted in the uterus to establish a pregnancy and help maintain a healthy pregnancy. Estrogen: Like progesterone, estrogen is secreted by the corpus luteum until the placenta takes over. This hormone plays a key role in the development of the fetus, and it triggers the growth of several organs and other bodily systems in the baby. By about three days postpartum you’re essentially back to a baseline that is close to non-pregnant. So if you can imagine, it’s sort of like PMS on steroids, or something like that. It’s just so sudden and can cause huge emotional changes. These changes hold sacred purpose in the pregnancy to postpartum transiton such as: -Healing. -Cosmic Imprinting. -Resting/Relaxing. -Producing Breastmilk. -Bonding with Baby. Progesterone, the calm and chill hormone that you became accustomed to in pregnancy, goes offline, so the hormones needed for breastfeeding can come online more quickly. The process of hormonal calibration continues for months, as the body works to get the uterus back to normal size and to produce an increasing amount of breast milk for a growing baby. The body is flushing itself of excess fluids that store now-unnecessary hormones. One of the reasons that new mothers are encouraged to stay warm and sweat a lot is so this process of flushing can be thorough and complete. Tears can be a divine part of this process of elimination. ♡ @lophotobirth @thepositivepregnancyjourney
