Wombsisterhood #mythbusters | Standard Hospital Recommendations Edition
We are here to bust some common myths about standards and remind you that this is YOUR body, your baby, your birth even in a hospital.
•You have to be induced or your baby will be too big & Placenta will age/stop providing oxygen/nutrients to baby
FALSE: Updated data shows full term pregnancy and beyond in a healthy maternal/Fetal setting poses no higher risk, 40-43wk gestation is a variation of normal and induction may increase risk of waterfall of intervention/trauma.
•You will have to labor & Birth on your back.
False: This myth is a common perceived assumption based on medias depiction of birth and routine monitoring/checks. You can in fact actively labor/birth around the room, bathroom and L&D hallways in any position of your choice.
•You are not allowed to labor in water
False: This Myth is also founded in assumption based on the fact hospital policy usually disallows submersion in a tub once amniotic sac has broken - You can infact labor in the tub prior to reptured membranes + labor and birth in the shower using the flowing water warmth and pressure for relief even after your membranes have ruptured.
•You must receive continuous fetal monitoring
False: If you have not received Narcotics (Pain medication)/Epidural you are free to choose intermittent fetal monitoring which allows you off the monitor for a period of time and back on periodically to check on baby at your consent. Many nurses encourage Intermittent monitoring and active upright laboring.
•You must wear a mask
False: This myth is founded in confusion- MANY nurses encourage mothers to "do what they can and remove it if needed" with full understanding you are in a laborious state of strenuous bodily work.
•You are required to follow standard procedures
False: Standard procedures are set for organization but are not required, evidence based or always necessary. There is a time and a place for everything, education is empowement.
•Your baby must receive all standard procedures immediately
False: You can delay or decline any and all newborn procedures
