How do we live set apart in a Fallen World - Even in Birth?

We talk so often about being “set apart”…

but what does that actually look like when we’re walking into a hospital, facing a system built on fear, liability, and control?

Scripture never told us to run from the world.

It told us to walk through it with wisdom, discernment, and peace that surpasses understanding.

Just like Daniel served in Babylon.

Just like Joseph led in Egypt.

Just like Esther stood in a palace that wasn’t built for her.

They didn’t overthrow the systems,

they honored God within them.

They walked in identity, not intimidation.

They stayed set apart even when they couldn’t stay outside.

Birth is no different.

Are we meant to change the system?

The world is fallen; creation itself groans.

Hospitals are part of that brokenness.

Protocols are built on fear.

Liability shapes decisions.

Control is mistaken for safety.

But our calling is not always to fix every broken system.

Our calling is to walk into them with Heaven’s posture,

to carry God’s presence

where policy tries to overshadow personhood.

We are not simply system-changers.

We are the light-bearers within the system.

Are doulas meant to “save” clients from trauma?

No.

We are not saviors.

We are not deliverers.

We are not the ones who heal.

Only God is.

Our role is not to rescue

but to accompany, to witness, to support, to protect peace,

and to help families hear truth over fear.

We do not carry the weight of outcomes.

We carry the mantle of presence,

and we point toward the One who carries everything else.

Is there a way for believers to navigate hospital birth faithfully?

Absolutely.

We practice the same principles Scripture teaches for living set apart:

• Wisdom like Solomon — understanding your rights and real options.

• Boldness like Esther — speaking when needed and staying silent when wise.

• Peace like Jesus — refusing to match the atmosphere of fear around you.

• Discernment like Daniel — knowing when a line has been crossed.

• Meekness like Moses — strength expressed as self-control.

Being set apart doesn’t mean isolation.

It means identity, even under fluorescent lights and fetal monitors.

Choosing Your Birth Team in a Fallen System

God gives us the freedom to choose wisely:

✔ Providers who honor informed consent

✔ Nurses who respect boundaries

✔ Midwives who understand physiology

✔ Doulas who focus on peace, not conflict

✔ Teams who communicate, not control

✔ Parents with the God given authority to take self agency & radical responsibility

You can’t always avoid the hospital

anyone can end up there.

But you can avoid unnecessary intervention by being educated & how you execute your decision making through self advocacy.

Confrontation Isn’t Always Courage

In a fallen system, confrontation often leads to retaliation.

But peacemaking is not passivity, it’s strategy.

It’s preserving safety.

It’s keeping the mother in the center.

It’s protecting the atmosphere.

It’s remembering that anger rarely softens hardened systems…

but calm clarity often does.

Doulas and parents:

Keep the peace. Know your rights. Hold your ground with grace.

Choose truth over tension.

Choose wisdom over warfare.

Choose God’s presence over the pressure to perform or comply.

We are set apart, even here, especially here.

We live in a fallen world,

but we don’t walk into it alone.

God doesn’t step back at the hospital door.

His Spirit goes where you go.

His authority covers where systems fail.

His peace speaks louder than fear.

We are not trying to save the system.

We are trying to stay faithful in it.
